How Water Spots Form
Water spots are ringed white stains made of traces of salts, minerals, and acids dissolved in water. When water evaporates, it leaves behind the mineral deposits.

• Don't clean your car with tap water. Tap water causes hard water spots to form. Hard water spots are cloudier, contain more sodium and magnesium ions, and are difficult to clean with soap.

Plus, when you clean your vehicle and leave it out in the sun, the tap water is sure to evaporate quickly and leave minerals behind.

• When you leave your car out in the rain, bonded mineral spots and etched-in water spots form. Bonded mineral spots have a higher concentration of minerals, but etched-in water spots are the most severe forms of water spots, and old, worn cars are the most vulnerable to them.

• When sprinklers spray your car, they leave hard water spots, which are more difficult to remove than rain water.
