Get an interior detail in the Winter for a safer drive

Get an interior detail for a safer winter drive
Do you ever wonder how to feel safer driving in Winter? It isn't all about exterior vehicle maintenance; the interior matters too. What you need is an interior detail.

A clean, clear driving space gives you the focus you need when braving the slippery season. Furthermore, interior details improve your well-being and boost your mood, which can be particularly helpful for seasonal depression.

Road Salt Messes Up Your Interior, Too.
Winter weather constantly attacks your car's interior, so you must pay special attention to it! You contaminate the interior surfaces when you inevitably track in road salt and chemicals. For example, when road salt dissolves in water, it creates a white residue that builds up on the carpets and floor mats.

Furthermore, salt stains and bright sunlight fade the seats. Also, odor gets trapped in the floors, carpets, and seat covers.

Seven Ways An Interior Detail Will Give You A Better Driving Experience
Since Winter adds so many hazardous conditions to your drives, an interior detail is necessary to improve your journeys. So, let's dive into how this is possible:
  1. Cleaning interior fabric removes allergens, thus improving the air quality, which is undoubtedly healthier than driving with the windows down in the cold!
  2. Tommy's Terrific Car Wash in Plano, TX states that your vehicle should provide "a sanctuary from the chaos of the outside world.” Do you want to step in your car and get hit with a rush of chaos and stress? Just like a cluttered space can clutter your mind, a clear space can CLEAR your mind.
  3. Oftentimes, the condition of your automobile sets the tone for your drive. So, removing odor and even adding calming fragrances will allow for relaxing adventures.
  4. Like many people see cars as an expression of their owners, many drivers see their vehicles as extensions of themselves. So, when you clean your interior, you may boost your senses of control, order, and confidence.
  5. If you plan on selling your car, detailing and maintaining it will increase its resale value and attract more potential buyers.
  6. Simply put, the act of cleaning itself has mood-boosting effects.
  7. Clean areas are less visually stimulating, which leads to enhanced focus, mental clarity, and safer driving. A study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that drivers who take their eyes off the road for more than two seconds double their risk of a crash.

So, if you live in West Michigan, we've got you covered! Call Garza Detailing at 616-836-7465 or fill out our Detailing form for a quote. We offer exterior and interior details in a controlled climate.

As always, drive safe!

A Driver's Winter Survival Guide

A driver's winter survival guide
You're probably aware that Winter weather and road salt can wreak havoc on your vehicle. If you want it to last many more Winters, you must prepare before the season hits. A great place to start is reading this guide.

A Driver's Winter Survival Guide

These are the steps required to prepare your car for Winter:
  • Check your battery, and clean the terminals. Car batteries work much harder during Winter, significantly if the oil has thickened. You can use a computerized battery tester to test your battery, and if it's at the end of its rope, replace it. Then, clean the battery terminals and apply a protectant spray.
  • Top up with antifreeze. If you dilute coolant with water and the water freezes, your engine will overheat.
  • Do a pre-winter inspection. This includes checking the brakes, tire tread, pressure, lights, belts, wiper blades, and defroster and replacing your brake fluid.
  • Switch to Winter tires. According to Aceable, winter tires have a deeper tread that “allows for better traction in snowy, slushy, icy, and rainy conditions.” Switching your tires can prevent at-fault accidents.
  • Apply ceramic coating. Ceramic coating lasts 12+ months and works on exterior paint, wheels, glass, and interior surfaces. Furthermore, this hydrophobic surface shields against road salt, dirt, and UV rays. So, ceramic coating can protect your vehicle from rusting and corrosion.
  • Wash the entire car regularly. Clean everything, including the undercarriage, to remove salt particles. The undercarriage is especially vulnerable to corrosion and rusting.
  • Lubricate the window tracks. Freezing water can seep into the window tracks and create drag when you try to open the window. Then, that drag can damage the window regulator cables, costing hundreds of dollars.
  • Lubricate parts of your vehicle that could freeze up. It would be best if you lubed the weather stripping so you don't get frozen out of your car. Lubricate the latch mechanism to ensure that you can always open the hood. Lastly, lube the lock cylinders so they don't corrode and make it impossible to use your key.
  • Switch to Winter wiper blades. Do so for better visibility and to prevent streaking and ice from packing.
  • Check and replace your hood lifts. If they're difficult to move in Winter, replace them because they could stop working in freezing temperatures.
  • Keep a Winter survival kit in your automobile. Make sure to include:
    1. A flashlight
    2. A candle-powered heater
    3. A pencil and a notepad
    4. A cell phone charger
    5. A compact tire inflator
    6. A bag of cat litter or floor sweep absorbent (to regain traction on ice)
    7. A small tool kit (zip ties, screwdrivers, pliers, duct tape, and an adjustable wrench)
    8. A small shovel
    9. Jumper cables
    10. A first-aid kit
    11. A can of Fix-a-Flat
    12. Warm gloves, a hat, and a blanket
  • Check the condition of your coolant. Make sure you have enough coolant of good quality in your vehicle.
  • Do NOT use the car wash. The water can freeze your locks and door handles and corrode the surfaces. When we detail your vehicle in our heated studio, your car is completely dry before it is delivered back to you.
  • Make sure your tire pressure works for Winter. The ideal tire pressure is 30 to 35 PSI.
  • Consider getting a rust inspection. A professional will be able to tell you what essential repairs to get.

So, if you live in West Michigan, call Garza Detailing at 616-836-7465 or fill out our detailing form for a quote. We can detail your car and apply the ceramic coating for ultimate protection.

Why Winter is the Perfect Time for Detailing

We get it, winter isn't the time people think about getting their car detailed. However, we have a lot of compelling reasons why it's the perfect time, like protecting your paint and interior from road salt and grime. Not to mention mishaps like spills and buildup of pet hair still happen year-round, along with everything that the kids and pets drag in. Moisture from snow causes odor when it collects in the interior.

Why Garza Detailing Is The Right Choice for an Interior Detail
Garza Detailing isn't your run-of-the-mill detailer. Most detailers don't offer services in Winter because they're mobile. We have a local heated studio and operate year-round.

As previously mentioned, Winter interior details are necessary. Basic services include vacuuming, polishing, and mirror cleaning. Our interior services, however, are extremely thorough:
  1. First, we go through the vehicle, including between and under the seats, and toss trash that won't fit in the vacuum.
  2. Starting in the back of the car, we use compressed air and a Tornador to blow everything toward the front. We also use the Tornador on the seats to break up debris.
  3. Then, we're ready to vacuum the interior, including under the seats.
  4. To clean the headliners of any stains, we use a small amount of steam and chemicals.
  5. Depending on whether or not the floor mats are rubber or carpet, we will power wash or scrub them. Then, we hang them to dry.
  6. Next, we vacuum, steam, and, if necessary, perform extractions on the carpet.
  7. Then, the primary cleaning process begins. Starting at the cockpit, working on the dash down, we scrub with a ninja pad, a brush, steam, and chemicals. We clean the whole car, including the center console, armrests, cup holders, and door pockets.
  8. After that, we use air to remove moisture from the buttons, vents, and between the seats.
  9. Then, we wash the windows with a towel and chemicals. We use a second towel to remove the chemicals and a third to ensure all substances and streaks are gone.
  10. Finally, we put UV protection on all leather and plastic.

Winter Exterior Details are Vital
A common misconception is that you MUST wait for Spring for an exterior detail of your car. It isn't only possible to detail your vehicle in Winter; it's essential. Automobiles are vulnerable to snowy weather.

When roads get icy, they get salty. Unfortunately, road salt slowly eats away at paint, plastic, rubber, and metal. Furthermore, the more prolonged snow, ice, and road grime sit on your vehicle, the more potential for scratching, corrosion, and cracking. The remedy is washing, clay bar, buffing, and polishing or waxing. A Ceramic Coating will provide even more protection from this, 12 months worth!

Two Misconceptions About Detailing

2/6/2023

Do you need help keeping your vehicle clean but wrestle with the idea of detailing it based on the conditions of where you live? Here is some insight for West Michigan’s drivers who want to avoid damage to their automobiles.
1. I Shouldn’t Get My Vehicle Detailed In The Winter.
Yes, you should! That's why we’re available for your vehicle throughout the winter, a harsh season. Unfortunately, there are many reasons why your car, SUV, or truck is vulnerable in the cold:
  • Salt and sand can build up, chipping away at your paint.
  • Freezing water expands, leading to scratches.
  • Unless you store your vehicle in a controlled climate, it will likely develop mold. Cold morning starts, salty roads, and damp weather allow rust to form. Rust will weaken your interior floor and chassis over time.

Get your automobile detailed, and we will eliminate interior odor rather than masking it. Additionally, we can protect the exterior paint, which protects the rest of your vehicle, from dampness and road debris with a clay bar treatment and a coat of wax.

2. I Live On A Dirt Road, So What’s The Point Of Cleaning My Vehicle With A Detailer?
Regular detailing will prolong the life of your vehicle, especially if you live on a dirt road. With this in mind, these are the risks you’ll face with mud and dirt:
  • If mud gets in the scratches on your vehicle, it can do irreversible damage.
  • Dry mud can allow rust to form.
  • The undercarriage requires regular cleaning, or mud will damage the frame, axle oil seals, idler pulleys, and suspension. The same concept applies to your door jams and interior. You don’t want your door to freeze shut!
  • If you regularly clean your automobile with an automatic drive-through car wash, the brushes, high-pressured water, and harsh chemicals are further scratching and damaging the paint.

Again, a clay bar treatment and a coat of wax can protect your paint from mud, dirt, dust, and rain. If you want to keep your beloved car, SUV, or truck as long as possible, don’t let the soil stop you from getting a detail.

Interior Detail
If you don’t see sense in detailing the exterior of your vehicle in the winter, you should still protect the interior. When you track in salt, snow, and mud, the subsequent damage occurs:
  • Fabric seats absorb dampness, leading to odor.
  • The mud from your shoes can soak through the carpet. If you don’t take care of it, mold will grow underneath it. Also, dirt and salt stains become more difficult to remove the longer they stay in place.
  • ‘Tis dry skin season, and hand lotion build up on the driving wheel and armrests, deteriorating the natural oils.
  • Mud stains the interior ceiling, and moisture can cause it to sag.
  • Salt dries leather out and builds up debris, which leads to cracks in the leather. Conditioning leather is crucial for the combination of moist and dry conditions that winter brings to your interior,

How Winter Effects Your Car

How to Prepare and Protect Your Vehicle from Winter
Driving on the Lakeshore in West Michigan is hard on your vehicle in the winter. But what if there was something you could do to prevent the damage that happens? We are happy to tell you there is!

How Winter Weather Effects Your Car
So, what happens if you DON’T keep your car clean throughout the season? Snow, sleet, ice, and rust destroy it:
  • Road salt reacts with metal, which can corrode and rust your vehicle and fade the paint.
  • Road salt and sand can build up and chip away at the paint. They also become flying debris from the road, other drivers, and salt trucks, scratching your paint. When freezing water expands, it damages the paint, as well.
  • In addition, cold morning starts, salty roads, and melting snow and ice allow rust to form. Rust will eat away at your paint and affect the interior floor, weakening your chassis from above and below over time.
  • If you don’t store your vehicle in a controlled climate, you're likely to find interior mold with a musty smell.

Are Car Washes the Solution?
Experts recommend washing a car 1-2 times per month to prolong the life of the vehicle. In the winter, once a week is a much more proactive schedule. So, what about driving through the car wash every month? Unfortunately, the solution isn’t simple: Automated carwashes are hard on your paint. Even if you opt for extras like "wax" sprayed on your car along the conveyor belt, the brushes simultaneously create tiny scratches in the paint from debris lodged by the previous automobiles before you.

Why Is the Condition of the Paint So Important & What Should I Do?
Sure, we all want our automobile to look as good as when we drove it off the lot, but its paint is there for much more than head turning. Given that a vehicle's paint protects its metal from corrosion and rust, it is essential it be cleaned AND given a protective coating of wax or polish to create a barrier from winter's moisture. If one wants to take an extra precaution, a clay bar treatment to smooth out scratches and remove engrained debris will protect the vehicle's paint and metal from water expanding on the damage already there. A ceramic coating will make moisture bead and roll off and protect against corrosion from road salt. It is ideal to have this done before the first snow falls to avoid damage happening in the first place, and then follow up with maintenance wash and waxes every month. At Garza Detailing, we even offer weekly simple maintenance washes with an interior vacuum and quick clean for a reasonable price!

So, CONTACT US for a quote! We’ll ensure your vehicle is clean and protected throughout the winter, so you don’t have to pay for the damage.

Safe driving!
